The Vampiric Families/Clans

It strikes me that I've previously alluded to but never fully explained the Vampiric Family. When a mommy vampire and a daddy vampire love each other very much, they will, together, hunt and drain a human of his blood, laughing while they do it. They will then proceed to insert blood from both of them back into the corpse, creating a creature that is a combination of their respective DNA. This adopted "baby" stays with the pair for a time, usually no more than five years, and then strikes out on its own. However, occasionally the parents and their children stay together, sometimes indefinitely. Together, they are formidable.
Any group of vampires working together is a force to be reckoned with. While we vampires do not usually engage in in-fighting (there are some very obvious exceptions to this rule, which I will no doubt describe in their full gory detail later), when two families begin butting heads lone vampires quickly make themselves scarce.
As I said, this does not usually happen, but it is always wise to be aware of the clans in your area. The family that I am more or less affiliated with is a mid-ranging family; it has only been in existence for two-hundred years, give or take. Father and Mother favor the discipline of their respective eras, and this strict parenting policy generally results in well-bred, high-class vampires. However, there are miss-fires. My older brother Stefan for instance.
I eventually plan to create my own clan, a sub-set of Father’s clan of course. Mother wouldn’t like it if I broke from the flock like that. Vampiric clans (also called Vampiric families, since that is essentially what they are.) are the closest thing to a government that we vampires have, the clans each decide upon a set of rules to follow and then they enforce them. I won’t bore you with details, it’s usually things like “make sure you tell the head of the clan if you accidentally eat someone important,” or “don’t try to have sex with humans, you’ll probably get a disease.”
All clans have a rule governing the creation of new vampires, because a new vampire is dangerous. They don’t know how to be subtle, they just know one thing: the thirst. It is very bad to have a rogue vampire running around your territory, that is why the clan structure is so effective. By having this structure of support and knowledge, a newly transformed vampire can learn about his glorious new form without risking exposure.

Evangeline is her name, in case you were wondering. Not that you’d be interested in my affairs; and not that I would be willing to volunteer such information. Forget I mentioned it.

Stefan's Tale Part 2

Well, the time was upon us, and we all bundled into the dining room, each dragging our respective dates along with us. Mother and father had each invited a couple from the surrounding farms, to add some solid meat to the table, so all in all we numbered eighteen. Except, that we didn’t number eighteen. Counting the filled seats, we numbered only seventeen. Stefan had failed to bring a date.
A palpable sense on tension filled the room, as father said grace. Happily, the introduction of the food relieved some of the awkwardness, As with tradition, Scott started the meal by asking for silence. He then bent on one knee, and turned to his date, a stocky girl of Germanic heritage. She covered her mouth with one hand, as he grasped her other hand with both of his. He smiled at her…but instead of popping the question as she no doubt expected, he popped his fangs. She didn’t even have time to scream before he fell on her wrist in a frenzy. This signaled the rest of us to introduce our dates in similar, albeit less dramatic, manner.
The smell of blood permeated the air as we drank and drank, passing each dish around the table. I’m proud to say what’s-her-name-from-china did me proud; she added such a foreign flavor to our feast. The final dish was a bottle of wine that father had laid down using the blood left over from the last feast, fifty years ago. Five decades of aging added just a tint of bitterness to the blood, which gnawed and snarled at the back of my throat before submitting to my maw. Appetites satiated, but not fully satisfied, we adjourned to the lounge to discuss business.
All of us children had our reports of the past five years, and all of us had our proposals for the next five. This is a general requirement at our five-year family conferences, but is absolutely a necessity at the fifty-year’s feast. As is customary, we proceeded from the youngest child to the oldest, the theory being that we were saving the best report for last. Sadly, this was not always so; Scott’s reports could be so boring that the entire family fervently wished to die (Well, Diane actually did attempt suicide during one of Scott’s reports, but we stopped her).
Anyway, I went first and then Selena, Patrick, and Diane. That’s when the trouble really got going. Stefan stood up to give his report, and we all perked up because Stefan’s speech was bound to be more interesting than Scott’s. That turned out to be true, but not in the way that any of us had expected. That would be because he didn’t have one. He stood up, cleared his throat, and said in his low growl, “I have nothing to report.” Then, he just sat down. This crossed a line. Not bringing a dish to the feast is rude, but not bringing a report is insubordination.
Father raised his bushy eyebrows in incredulity.
“Have you forgotten how to give a report, Stefan?” He asked, clearly trying to give Stefan an out.
“No.” Stefan said, deadpan, “There is nothing to report.”
Father harrumphed and said, “Well Stefan, that is disappointing. Most disappointing indeed. But then, I suppose you will not object to staying here at the manor with us for a while, until you’ve gotten some manners back into you?” Stefan said nothing, but glared sullenly at the floor.
That business concluded, Scott stood and nervously gave his report. He must have shortened it a great deal, because no one was listening to him. Scott then jumped right into his five-year proposal, which was something boring that had to do with some territory negations between our family and another. “Thank you, Scott.” Father said, attempting to force some vigor into his voice, and failing miserably. “You proposal sounds reasonable, and will no doubt be accepted when we vote on it later. Stefan? Do you…?” He trailed off as Stefan looked up at him and simply said, “No.”
The proposals went by in a blur; nothing could overshadow the strangeness of Stefan’s actions. At last, it was my turn again. I stood up, and composed myself before taking the plunge.
“As you are all aware, I have just five years ago moved my operations region to the country across the waters. I currently reside in a reasonable estate on the mid-western region of the United States. This affords me good access to most of the country by plane, should an emergency arise. This has been a good location, for the past five years. Looking forward, however, I think it will be necessary to have greater access and control over the western coast, and the Asian lands beyond it. Therefore, I propose that I relocate my center of operations to as city on the coast.”
At this, Stefan leapt to his feet and spat at me, “Those territories belong to me!” Father waved him to his seat, and looked at me fiercely.
“Rude as he is, Stefan has a point. Why should you receive from Stefan’s portion?”
I answered carefully, and with as little emotion as possible, “Stefan’s point would be valid, this is true…if his claim to the territory were in truth, valid.” In the collective gasp that followed, I spoke swiftly and commandingly.
“Stefan has not been exemplary these past five years,” I stated, pacing form side to side, “even disregarding his behavior tonight. From my vantage in the States, much rumor has reached my ears. Rumor that speaks of a new and dangerous clan Stefan plans to create; one he has in fact already begun to create.”
Stefan shouted something in denial, but again Father waved him down. “Where is your evidence of these grave accusations?”
I gazed triumphantly and directly at Stefan. “My evidence lies in the source of the rumors, one who would know very intimately the details of such a plan. The vampires Demelza, whom they call the rogue.
To explain: Demelza is a vampiress who belonged to another clan, a clan that had given us no small measure of trouble in the past. Unexpectedly, they spat her out of their ranks, due to her irresponsible blood-lust and tendencies to incite violence between clans. She went rogue, belonging to no one and obeying nothing, save for the dictates of her own twisted conscience. We’d had to fight her off of our territory before, and we had no love of her.
“Rumor, however, is not enough to satisfy me. I desired proof, and so I traveled to China, on the pretense of a vacation. What I found there was shocking.” I threw a small packet of photographs onto the table we sat around. “These are photographs I took of a meeting between, Demelza, to vampires who I have never seen nor smelled before, and Stefan. According to the dictates of our clan, Stefan has been consorting with an enemy to the clan, and has been inciting rebellion by splitting form us.”
I sat, waiting to see what effect my words and my evidence would have. I did not wait long.
“Stefan.” Father said, with quiet fury in his voice, “What truth is their in this? Do you deny these claims, this evidence?”
“I deny nothing,” Stefan snarled, “For there is nothing to deny. I have been meeting with Demelza, we have been lovers these past three years. Together, we have raised three strong sons, and will raise more. I have long been waiting for the chance to leave your house, and now I have the means to do it. Your outmoded ways would have us scraping and bowing to the other clans, but I will not submit. I have too much honor to willingly put myself under another’s heel.
“Know then, Stefan,” Father said, his voice more quiet and yet more menacing than I had ever heard before, “That your wish is granted.” Stefan blinked in surprise.
“It is?”
“Yes,” Father said, malice like a flickering flame behind his eyes, “You will be beholden to no one, just as you have described. Because you are now and forevermore rogue. I declare you a traitor, a rebel, an outsider. You are not, and never will be welcome in my house again. Leave now, while I still allow it.”
Stefan stepped back, then turned on his heel and made for the door. He stopped at the door, as if about to say something, but instead merely tried to express his hatred toward me in a glare. Ah, there was such venom in it (Not actual venom. it was…figurative venom. Is that a real thing?)! Then he left, slamming the door behind him.
“On that happy note, I believe we should continue on to the voting.” I said, a grin upon my face.

That’s it. Where you expecting something heart-warming, involving a fat old man garbed in red, carrying gifts for all the good little children in the world? Clearly you haven’t been reading my blog very thoroughly.

Merry Christmas, sleep well, and email me your address if you’d like to invite me for Christmas dinner. I can make any event a once in a life-time experience.

Stefan's Tale Part 1

It has been alerted to me that the humans are celebrating the holidays now, and that my essay this week should be themed accordingly. I resent this idea in theory, but in practicality wish to spread my net of readership as far as possible, so as to spread the truth. Therefore, I will tell you Stefan’s tale.
It was the winter of 1979, and I was fresh from a vacation to Asia. My parents invited all of us back to the family estate for a clan meeting, and a feast. Well, we were all in attendance. Mother’s feasts were legend, and I had not been alive long enough to witness one, as they occur only every fifty years.
It is customary to bring a dish to these sorts of events, so I brought a young Chinese girl who was hoping to use me as a ride to America. As soon as what’s-her-name and I entered the manor, Mother whisked her to an upstairs bedroom.
“An Asian? How wonderful!” She declared when she’d returned to the front hall, where I was hanging up my coat. “That will add the perfect oriental flavor I need.”
“I’m glad that she fits the meal, and I brought you something else as well…” I produced a small glass vial, and held aloft the container of a most precious liquid. Her eyes grew large, and her fangs involuntarily shot out.
“Soy sauce.” She breathed. “You are so considerate, my son.”
My obligations fulfilled, I presented myself in Father’s study to give him a report on my region, which was at that time the mid-western United States. After we discussed my report, he deemed it suitable for presentation and released me.
Upon entering the communal lounge, I was greeted by a chorus of happy voices. My five siblings where there, happily playing a card game. Stefan stood and greeted me, a mocking tone in his voice.
“Ah, little brother, it has been too long.”
“Yes, brother, it has been quite some time since we were last together. I had the misfortune of not seeing you while I was vacationing in your territory, but I did manage to enjoy myself nonetheless.”
You will notice reader, that my vocabulary and speaking style are at their highest level when conversing with my family. I was created last, and in 1979 my parents had not yet created another child. As such, I was considered the “baby” of the family.
At this point in time, you probably require a crash course in my family. My oldest brother is Scott, the most boring person in the entire world. Stefan is next oldest, being only a few years younger than Scott. Next is Diane, my oldest sister, and then Patrick. Selena is the closest to my age, having moved out of the manor only a year after I moved in. Patrick currently lives in Ireland, and spends a lot of time with Mother and Father. Diane prowls the streets of London, but isn't as social as Patrick is. Selena hunts throughout France, and Scott focuses primarily in Germany. Stefan used to live in the old soviet states, but now we’re not really sure where the Hell he is. Yes, I’m getting to that. Be patient.

Anyway we were all excited because a winter solstice feast like this only happens every fifty years, so neither me nor Selena had been to one (Although no one was teasing Selena about that). The others entertained themselves by laughing at me and talking about the feast. I ignored their jibes, Because I knew something they didn't. (To be continued.)

An Emergency Announcement

To my faithful pupils: my most sincere apologies. Due to a sudden influx of human traffic in my area, I have been too busy of late to upload a new article this week. The holiday season is an excellent one for preying on traveling businessmen, and airports are easy places for a man with a taxi cab and a fake license. Rest assured, there will be a post of special magnificence for the winter solstice. I've already finished it in fact, but I need time to perfect my work.
Again, my apologies, and my promise of something truly remarkable in a week.

The Transformation Process: A Brief Summary

It is high time that I explain an issue that has been mistold far too often: Vampiric Origins. For starters, what is a Vampire? Plainly put, a vampire is a human that is about to die...forever. I will need to explain that, of course, for the slow humans (as if there is any other kind).
When a vampire sucks a human dry like a mosquito, the human is scientifically dead.  No heart-beat, no blood, and negligible brain activity (although that last one is no change from usual). However, this freshly drained cadaver has the potential to be so much more than human. It could become a vampire. But merely draining the human is not enough, a transformative ingredient is required: Vampiric Venom.
Our fangs are hollow, that's how we suck your sweet, warm, life-blood from your veins. But the pipe can go both ways. If we so choose, we can insert a bit of our own blood back through our fangs into you. "What!?" You say with a stereotypically human expression of dumbfoundedness on your face, "I thought you said that venom was the ingredient, not your blood." Yes, I did. You see, the venom we can insert is actually our blood, it is the source of our power and it is what makes us what we are: Nature's perfect predator. It is also the catalyst to your transformation.
Essentially, the body is put into stasis; it is not alive, and yet it is not dead either. This is where we get the phrases “Living Dead,” and “Undead.” After the transformation is completed (Pro-Tip: It can take up to twelve hours for a human to fully transform, so I suggest bringing a puzzle, or a book, or something), the vampire arises, fully conscious…and fully thirsty. Physically, we are stronger and faster than before, and their features take on a dramatic change.
You see, the venom/blood that we insert into you contains a little bit of our DNA. It attacks the DNA of its new body and forms an entirely new person. Some of the host DNA survives the process, but enough of us is now in you that your personality and physical features are different. Your own mother wouldn't recognize you now.

There it is: the glorious rebirth of a dull and boring human into a graceful and thirsty creature of the night. There isn't room or time enough for me to explain all aspects of Vampiric Transformation now, but I will release several essays later on some specifics. For now, you will have to be satisfied with this general overview.

Sparkling and Mirrors

I would like to start off by saying, “no.” Just…no.” Vampires do not sparkle. Period. At the same time, we do not burst into flame when the sun touches our skin. The simplest explanation, and therefore the one I will use for my primarily human audience, is that vampires are nocturnal. We are nocturnal primarily because humans are not nocturnal…and that makes feeding easier. Pro-Tip: A sleepy human is a stupid human (Well, stupid-er). Since we therefore are not out in the sun much, we don’t get tan. We also have much slower circulation than humans, so we are very pale naturally. However, we do not burst into flames.
I really am at a loss as to where this myth came about. People just put two and two together and somehow made five. Also, about the whole “mirror” thing. It’s just simply not true. We can be seen in mirrors. We’re just very good at sneaking up on people. Take a peek in a mirror, no one is there. Check again, and you suddenly notice—BAM!—all your blood is gone!

That is actually one of my favorite methods to eat-and-run. But if you only remember one thing from this, it should be that vampires do not sparkle. All right? You wouldn’t believe how often I get that question. Ugh, you humans make me sick. Except for when I’m digesting you. How delightfully twisted.
